Cat parents are some of my favorite humans. Yet, most of you have no clue how to shop for cat trees.
More often than not, you just look at the price tag. Cheap means good, right? Wrong. Very wrong.
You end up buying a cat tree that’s less than useless for your cat, then check the box and call it a day.
But here’s the truth: cat trees are the king of catification.
They’re the one piece of furniture that meets all your cat’s needs. They’re non-negotiable. And they’re extremely practical if you live in a smaller space.
So let me save you money, and save your cat the disappointment.
Because more than 95% of cat trees on the market aren’t worth buying.
Here’s a list of the most popular cat tree types on the market that you should NEVER buy…..
❌ The Coffee Table Cat Tree
I call it that because it looks like a tiny coffee table, short legs, plus a little seat. These are the cheapest option, and also the most worthless. They provide zero vertical space and no playground for your cat.
If your cat tree has the same height as your furniture, it’s useless.
❌ The Wobbly Cat Tree
These are a bit taller than the coffee-table types, and at first glance, they look fine. But they’re often made out of paperboard, not real wood. Lightweight. Flimsy. Easy to tip over.
The dead giveaway? A little string you’re supposed to attach to the wall to keep it from falling over!!
Even if they provide some height and play opportunities, they’re extremely dangerous.
Unstable cat trees can snap or collapse, and your cat can get seriously hurt.
❌ Cat Trees With Tiny Seats
Your cat can barely sit upright on them. Lounging? Stretching? Laying comfortably? Forget it.
Would you squeeze yourself into a child-sized chair? No.
If any of the cat tree seats is less than 16″, it’s too small.
If the seat doesn’t at least match your cat’s back length, it’s not usable.
❌ Wooden Cat Trees
One of the main purposes of a cat tree is feline scent diffusion. So your cat can smell themselves everywhere they go which makes them feel safe, at home, and meets their territorial ownership needs.
A wooden cat tree can’t hold the feline scent, not to mention, it’s very slippery, cats can’t grip it to climb, jump, or scratch.
It defeats the purpose entirely.
The cat tree must be fully covered in fabric
❌ Aesthetic-First Cat Trees
There are more cat trees designed for humans than for cats:
- Seats shaped like flowers or other odd, uncomfortable props.
- Awkward layouts that make it impossible to jump between levels.
- Decorative nonsense that just confuses your cat.
These cat trees may look cute in your living room, they’re quite expensive actually, but completely impractical for your cat.
You get to pick the color of the cat tree, but the size, height, stability, and design must work for your cat.
Otherwise what’s the point?
❌ The Wrong-Design Cat Tree
Many cat trees are made by people who don’t understand cats anatomy, or even how they move.
The design is just… off. You might not see it, but I can spot it instantly.
Think of the cat tree like a staircase. Each seat/level should naturally lead to the next.
If your cat can’t easily move up or down the tree, it’s the wrong design.
❌ Cheap Cat Trees
Cheap cat trees usually combine all the problems above, short, wobbly, slippery, tiny seats, and awkward designs.
Any cat tree under $250 is cheap.
That doesn’t mean everything above this price point is good, but at least this weeds out 80% of the bad ones.
Final Thoughts
Cat trees are non-negotiable for your cat. And they’re for your cat, not for you.
Buy ones that actually serve your cat, not just your wallet or your décor.
Let’s get your cat the home they truly deserve.
If this saved you from wasting money on the wrong cat tree…
