Cat Scratchers Shopping Guide FAQ

Fulfilling your cat’s scratching needs isn’t optional. It’s your job. Your duty. And honestly, it’s one of the easiest jobs in the world. Yet somehow, so many cat parents fail miserably at it.

Scratching is an instinct as natural as sneezing, blinking, stretching, or yawning. Cats need to scratch.

If you don’t give them the right scratching outlets, they’ll create their own, usually on your sofa, your door frames, or your favorite chair. They just have no other choice.

So let’s fix that. And give your cat the scratchers they totally deserve.

Here’s a straight-up FAQ style guide that answers your biggest scratching questions, and shows you how to turn your home into a cat scratching haven.

How Many Cat Scratchers Do I Actually Need?

More than you think.

A solid rule of thumb is 2–5 scratchers per room, depending on the size of the room.

That’s not “spoiling” your cat, that’s just meeting their basic need.

Scratchers should be available everywhere your cat hangs out: corners, walkways, near windows, and especially in their favorite lounging spots.

When it comes to scratchers, abundance is the only correct number.

What Types of Cat Scratchers Should I Buy?

All the ones your cat actually enjoys. And starting with the king of them all – cat trees.

If you’re not sure what your cat prefers yet, experiment with a few cheaper options before investing in the high-quality, long-lasting ones.

That said, some scratchers are absolutely non-negotiable in every cat household:

Cat Trees (Non-Negotiable Must-Have)

Cat parents often forget about cat trees when they think about scratchers. Big mistake.

Cat trees are hands down the best and most important cat scratcher you can buy, because they:

  • Have built-in scratchers: Almost every cat tree comes with built-in scratchers
  • Have lounge-style scratchers : The cat tree seats double as scratch-and-nap zones. Cats love shredding the seat, then collapsing right on top of it.
  • Are multi-texture heaven : Most cat trees combine sisal rope and carpet.
  • Have vertical + horizontal scratching options all in one piece.
  • Are a full scratching surface: The entire cat tree is an eligible scratching surface
  • Offer high-ground scratching : Cats adore scratching while being high up

Cat trees are your starting point when shopping for cat scratchers.

Vertical Scratching Posts

Perfect for cats who like to scratch tall while standing on their back legs. If your cat is into vertical scratching, this is must-have.

Cardboard Scratchers

High quality large cardboard scratchers have come along way, and they are now one of the best cat scratchers on the market.

They come in a huge variety of shapes, flat, angled, incline, ramp, vertical, cylinder, L-shape, round, rectangular, etc. , to create very satisfying scratching experiences, especially for cats who get bored easily, and those who love boxes.

Cat Scratcher Mats

Those are great to add on sofas, armchairs, and even beds for cats who love to cuddle with you (Netflix & chill).

They are super handy for cats to use right before or after their cozy naps with you. And they also protect your furniture (not that your sofa is more important than your cat!).

Do Cat Scratcher Sizes Matter?

Yes. Size matters. Big time.

Whatever scratcher you choose, it needs to be longer or taller than your cat’s body.

Scratching is a stretching activity, and if the scratcher is too small, it doesn’t count. So get rid of those $20 scratchers, they are less than useless.

Think of it this way: buying a tiny scratcher for a full-grown cat is like buying a treadmill that only works if you crawl on your knees. Pointless.

Rule of thumb: ~ 30” height or length scratcher or bigger

Final Thoughts

Scratching is therapy, exercise, stress relief, territory marking, and a full-body stretch all rolled into one activity.

Your cat needs multiple scratchers, their favourite styles placed in multiple locations.

Fail to provide them, and your cat will improvise… on things you’d rather they didn’t.

Provide them, and you’ll have a happier, healthier cat (and maybe a sofa that survives another year).

If this made you realize scratching isn’t about buying one random item…

Cat scratchers only work when they’re chosen, sized, and placed with intention. Otherwise, cats will keep improvising on your furniture.
