Let’s Talk About Furniture, shall we?
Imagine moving into a new place – and finding out you’re Not allowed to have any furniture in whatsoever.
Not a table, a single chair, or even a bed
How would that make you feel? Angry? Frustrated? Confused?
And how would you cope living in such place with zero furniture?
Will You be grateful for the floor?
Absolutely not, and neither is your cat
Sadly, this is the reality of many cats.
Humans need furniture. Not just want – NEED. And yet, we act like cats are freeloading roommates who should be grateful for using our furniture. They are absolutely NOT.
What furniture is to you, cat-only furniture is to your cat.
Without it, your cat’s well-being, mood and even health may be suffering in silence.
Why You Can’t Function Without Furniture (Even If You’re Broke)
You need a bed to sleep well, a chair to eat/work, a couch to rest, a table to gather, may be even a gym to work out. Cool
Let’s say I come to your home and take your bed away. Then your chairs. Your couch. Your desk. The table. Even your yoga mat.
Now, I tell you: “You can sleep on the floor, share the corner with others, and eat standing.”
What would that make you feel? Disrespected, frustrated, maybe even invisible. Like you don’t belong.
Can you cope? Can you live like this? For how long?
I know the answer is a hard NO even though furniture is not survival really, but to us, it is.
Our furniture is attached to our identity, boundaries, independence and our non-negotiable comfort standards.
Even the poorest homes have some furniture. Even squatters will drag a mattress in. Why?
It’s not about luxury – it’s about survival, territory, and dignity.
The truth is we are extremely territorial beings, and so are our cats.
Why Cats Need Their Own Furniture?
I hope I illustrated the pain clearly in the previous section.
The pain you feel for not having your own furniture is the same pain your cat feels for not having theirs.
But it’s not just that. It’s also a major safety issue to your cat.
See? Cats don’t understand walls, this is my home vs this is the neighbor’s home; like we do.
To you, even with just walls, empty floor and no furniture. you still have a place you can call yours.
Your cat, on the other hand, drives their sense of safety only from owing their furniture, and smelling their scent on it.
The only way for a cat to feel safe, comfortable, at home, and to have a deep sense of belonging is by having their cat-only furnishings that they own, use, enjoy and can spread their feline scent on
To your cat, having proper cat-only furnishings is not a luxury, it’s a survival need.
The Consequences of Not Having Proper Cat-Only Furniture to Your Cat
Let me start with the most important one that’s the root cause of many other cat behavior issues that many cat parents are not even aware of.
It’s territorial stress
Territorial stress is accumulated anxiety and stress overtime for not having their basic territorial ownership needs met.
And that territorial stress will eventually manifest in any of the followings:
- Urinary marking as a desperate attempt to feel at home.
- Withdrawal and chronic fear that leads to hiding under the bed for hours.
- Chronic boredom for not having proper cat-only furnishings to use and enjoy for jumping, scratching, climbing, grooming, lounging, and napping in their own spaces.
- Social Isolation : Not wanting to engage with others.
- Depression: Losing the desire to play.
- Aggression toward other humans or pets.
- Over-grooming as a desperate attempt to release accumulated stress from their bodies.
- Feeling sluggish, overeating, and gaining weight as a result.
Territorial stress could also weaken your cat’s immune system and lead to other health issues.
If I took away your bed, your chair, your couch, your gym, and your home office – And made you share the floor with your family 24/7 – You’d need therapy too.
What Counts as Cat-Only Furniture?
I hope I convinced you that cat-only furnishings is non-negotiable to your cat, the same way your furniture is non-negotiable to you.
So now, let’s identify what qualifies as cat-only furnishings.
Cat-only furnishings must:
- Be used by only your cat. So it only has a feline scent on it. That’s what territorial ownership is.
- Fit your cat’s body, size, and anatomy.
- Provide vertical spaces. Cats need to jump high up and stay high up.
- Be stable, spacious, and very comfortable to use.
Any furniture that’s used by you or any other pets, beside your cat, doesn’t count.
To a cat that’s considered a public space (I will use it but I know it’s not mine). It’s like you using a table and chairs in a restaurant, café, or using a park bench… You know they are not yours, yet you can use them.
The same principle applies.
Your cat has the absolute right to use all your furniture (Bed, couch, chair, table, desk, etc)…but they don’t count as cat-only furnishings.
Cat-only Furniture is made for cats, and is only used by cats, period.
Cat-Only Furniture to Buy
Here’s a list of the absolute essentials:
- Cat-trees : They are the king of cat furniture because it’s one piece of furniture that provides all your cat’s needs. Cat trees are non-negotiable.
- Cat window hammocks.
- Cat scratchers.
- Shelves & wall perches (Not the most practical, but a nice addition)
- Beds, caves (Ideally on a high up piece of your furniture, not on the floor)
Some of those pieces, especially cat trees and window hammocks must also provide comfortable window viewing spots for sunbathing, fresh air and nature entertainment.
