The Common Types of Cat Window Perches
There are two main types of cat window perches available based on how they attach to your window:
Cat Window Hammocks with suction cups
Those attach directly to the glass window
Benefits:
Those are my absolute favorite ones because they can go much higher up on the window as long as you get ones with high-quality suction cups.
Those are also ideal if your place has floor-to-ceiling windows, or large wide windows because you can stack them like stairs.
They work great in modern buildings, high-rises, and condos.
Limitations:
Those are not suitable if you live in a really old building where the glass window is not thick enough to handle the hammock’s weight.
They also won’t work well if your window is too narrow.
Cat Window Sill Perches
Those attach to the window frame, not the glass.
Benefits:
Usually Works well in older buildings with thin glass and narrow windows.
Limitations:
The perch can only go as high as the window frame, so we are height-limited. We also can’t stack multiple perches here either.
How to Choose the Right Window Perch for Your Cat
Weight Capacity:
We are looking for the highest weight capacity possible.
Holds up to 40 lbs (18 kg) is great.
Especially if you have a large breed cat or a bonded pair who might like to share a perch.
Perch Size:
The main objective of window perches is lounging and full relaxation, so it needs to be large enough to comfortably accommodate your cat’s length.

Attachment Type:
Look for perches where the suction cups are either attached directly to the perch itself or attached via metal bars from below the perch.
Perches where the suction cups are attached via ropes above the perch are not stable and are also very annoying to cats when jumping up or down.
Attachment Quality:
This is a major safety issue because the perch should not fall down. Look for high-quality suction cups or strong window frame attachments.
Bed Quality:
We are looking for a padded bed with walls here. Not a hardwood floor or a completely flat surface.
How Cats Use Window Perches
Due to the awkward look of window perches, most cats are very cautious about using them at first, and they will test them out for a while to make sure they are stable enough.
So when you get your first window perch, make sure to attach it a bit lower at first. Ideally, we want it to be an easy step from a couch, chair, or table.
High enough that it’s not near the floor, but low enough that it doesn’t require a major jump.
After your cat becomes fully comfortable using it, you can move it higher up.
