Getting the wrong litter boxes for your young kitten is one of the most common kitten parenting mistakes. And it’s why you struggle with your kitten litter box training.
What Are Kitten Litter boxes
Kitten litter boxes are the first litter boxes young kittens are introduced to in order to learn how to eliminate in a litter box.
They are the only valid litter boxes that should be used for kitten litter box training.
Young kittens should never be litter box trained in an adult cat litter box. It’s way too complicated and confusing for them to use.
You should only switch to an adult cat litter box after your kitten has mastered using the kitten litter box, is using it by default, and there have been no accidents.
There’s absolutely no rush on when to switch to an adult cat litter box, so please ditch your unrealistic expectations.
Kittens learn at different paces.
Also keep in mind that kittens who were separated from their birth mom and siblings way too soon, or rescued at a very young age, don’t have any role model to learn from, so they may take a bit longer to get the hang of it. That’s totally normal and expected.
How Many Kitten Litter boxes You Need
As many as you can get that fit in your kitten room.
The size of your kitten’s room is an important factor in determining how many kitten litter boxes to have.
Generally speaking, 3–6 kitten litter boxes in an average-size room.
Your kitten should have a litter box nearby wherever they are in their room, as a reminder of where to go when they need to.
I should also mention that kitten litter boxes should be distributed throughout your kitten room, not stacked next to one another, and they need to be in plain sight, next to walls or even in the middle of the room.
That’s how you speed up kitten litter box training by making it super easy for your kitten to find, access, and use their litter boxes.
What Kitten Litter boxes Look Like
Kitten litter boxes are always open and shallow, with low walls.
Contrary to adult cat litter boxes, they don’t need to be too large.
Kitten litter boxes should be either plastic or stainless steel.
Please avoid disposable cardboard litter boxes. Despite how practical they are, young kittens can easily chew on them, which is a high risk.
