The Best Cat Carriers That Cats Consistently Choose

Cat carriers are a necessary evil.

By default, most are designed for containment. But your cat’s comfort inside a carrier is a critical factor and one that should be taken seriously.

A well-designed carrier is one your cat is willing to enter by choice, feels safe settling into, and can tolerate staying in for a period of time without panic or resistance.

This matters far more than most cat parents realize. The carrier you choose directly affects your cat’s stress levels, their willingness to enter it, and how difficult or traumatic every future trip becomes.

The wrong carrier turns every vet visit into a battle. The right one makes the entire experience far less distressing for everyone involved.

Choosing the right carrier will also make or break cat carrier training, which is what builds your cat’s relationship with the carrier in the first place.

What To Look For In A Cat Carrier

Look for soft, large, bright carriers with multiple openings and mesh panels to keep the carrier airy, open, and non-confining.

Large Carrier (Size Matters A LOT)

Choose a carrier that is at least 20 inches long for standard domestic cats.

Nothing smaller – even for small cats.

If you have a large-breed cat, such as a Maine Coon, look for the same style of carrier, just sized up from the dog carrier section. (I’ll share my absolute favorite option below.)

Your cat should be able to lounge, stretch, and lie down comfortably inside the carrier.

They should never have to squeeze, curl tightly, or tense their body just to fit inside.

Comfort and space are essential for true acceptance.

Here’s a quick size guide:

  • ~ 20″ long carrier is suitable for small standard size cats.
  • ~ 24″ long carrier is suitable for medium to large standard size cats.
  • ~ 30″-40″ long carrier is suitable for extra large cats, including maine coons.

Soft Carrier Only

Fabric carriers allow your cat to spread their scent on the carrier and take full ownership of it as their own piece of furniture, which is extremely important, so they use it by default to lounge, play and hang out.

Bright Carrier Only

A bright carrier with mesh panels allows your cat to see their surroundings, which naturally makes them feel safer and more grounded.

Dark, enclosed carriers tend to increase both stress and resistance.

The carriers below are for all size cats, and for one cat per carrier only, each chosen for size, design, quality, comfort, and is feline approved.

Cats should NOT share a carrier unless you have a truly bonded pair who choose to be together. If that’s the case, then size up.
